Wohnungsgeberbestätigung in English – a small guide
What is a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung in English?
Wohnungsgeberbestätigung roughly translates to “landlord’s confirmation”. This document is a statement made by your accommodation provider that you have moved in at a set date. It takes the shape of a form filled in and signed by your landlord, agency or relative.
- This document is required in Germany to register your address with the Anmeldung. It’s not possible to complete the Anmeldung without it.
- It sometimes know as Einzugsbestätigung des Wohnungsgebers, or Vermieterbescheinigung as well in some parts of Germany.
Who fills in the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung?
The person providing you with accomodation has to provide you this document, as defined by law in the Bundesmeldegestz (BMG), section 19.
- This is most often a landlord directly, or represented by their estate management agency.
- However, in a flat share or sublet situation, this can be provided by the main tenant when there is a sublet, together with the permission of the landlord.
- When staying at a relative or a friend, it is also possible to obtain this document from them, even though there are no contracts or payments between you. Again, the landlord should in theory be aware of who lives there at all times.
How do I fill in a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung form?
The law states that the following information should be displayed on the document:
- Name and address of the accomodation provider, as well as the name of the owner/landlord, if both are different entities.
- Move in date.
- Address of the accomodation.
- Name of the person that moves in.
- Signature of the accomodation provider
As long as this information is there, any document could in theory be accepted. You can use the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung example form available there. You can fill-it in online & save it as PDF or print-it this empty template out first and fill it by hand.

This also works as Wohnungsgeberbestätigung pdf for Berlin. In fact, it works for any city in Germany.
Anmeldung without a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung: is it really not possible?
It is not possible to do the Anmeldung without a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. It is a compulsory document that will be requested by the city clerk (Beamter) during your appointement.
Some people argue that it is possible to fill that document in themselves as city clerks usually don’t check its authenticity and don’t have any resources to do it anyway. While this is true, it is still illegal to do this.
In Germany, a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation of residence) is required for registering your address (Anmeldung) at the local registration office (Bürgeramt). Whether a temporary accommodation can provide this document depends on the type of housing and the willingness of the provider.
Temporary accommodations and Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
While searching for a permanent solution, it’s not rare to use a temporary option to get your life started here. However, that might get in the way:
- Hotels & Hostels: generally, hotels and hostels do not provide a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung because they are considered temporary lodging, not residential addresses.
- Airbnb: Most airbnbs hosts do not provide it, but some long-term rental hosts (28+ days) might issue one if they are legally allowed to sublet.
- Serviced apartments: some serviced apartments do provide a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, especially those catering to business travelers staying for months.
- Sublets & temporary leases: if you sublet a room or apartment from a legal tenant with landlord approval, you can get a landlord confirmation
- Special cases: some cities allow specific registration options for people without permanent housing (e.g., a friend’s place, shelters), but this varies.
What to do:
- Ask in advance if the accommodation will issue the document
- Look for serviced apartments or long-term Airbnbs that explicitly mention registration.
- Consider short-term sublets (with landlord consent).
FAQ
It’s a landlord’s confirmation form required to register your address (Anmeldung) at the Bürgeramt.
Usually the landlord or property manager, but in sublets the main tenant can issue it if the landlord has approved.
It needs the landlord’s or main tenant’s details, the move-in date, the property address, your name, and a signature.
No, the registration is not possible without a valid form.
They are legally obligated to provide it, and refusal can lead to fines. You should notify your Bürgeramt if problems arise.
Yes, as long as the main tenant has landlord approval to issue it.
Some people do fill it out themselves. While this can speed things up, it sits in a legal grey zone. If the form is submitted without the landlord’s knowledge, it is considered unlawful and can theoretically lead to fines.

Hello Bastien, thank you so much for this information, it’s beneficial. I just wanted to ask if it’s okay to bring a copy of the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung for the anmeldung, or if it’s necessary to ask the landlord to give the document with a wet signature? Because the landlord sent me the PDF and the same question for the contract, should I bring a copy or bring the original?
Thank you in advance for your response.
Hello Bastien, I am coming in Germany and found temporary flat before I get SCHUFA and find permanent one. I found place by Airbnb. When can I get this document? right after I book place or when I arrive in Germany. Also how can I check if given papers are real?
I have got wohnungsgeberbestatigung document from my owner, but my name is split into first name and last name even though my passport only has name. Will it cause issue when getting city registration
Hello Bastien,
The wohnungsgeberbestatigung document contains me and my wife’s name, however, I have my 2 kids also living with me, so before going for anmeldung, do I need my kids name also added to this document or mine and my wifes name is enough.
Thank you in advance for your help.
BR,
Anky.
Hi thanks for the info.
I have a verbal contract w the landlord who knows and agrees it is ok that I rent the other room. She never got me the written contract as she promised (yet). I need to rent the other room, so I am providing the housing, I understand I can sign. But as the hauptmieter, I am not registered in the place. Will the registration office see that my name is not registered there, and wonder who ‘this person is’ that is giving the authority? On the form, I would put that I am the wohnungsgeber, but I would put that my address is in Vienna, Austria. Is this all just paper pushing, or is ok because I am providing the accurate details: I am the wohnungsgeber, his is my address abroad, this is the name of the owner, this is her address, and everything is fine? We are giving the accurate info. Or is it a red flag, that they have no proof I am the hauptmieter because I’m not in their system? Though it is true I’m the hauptmieter and have permission, it’s not clear to me how this process/form proves that. If I also don’t want any possible problems with me, is it better the landlord just signs it in this instance? but as the landlord has not gotten back to me with the written contract (I’m trying to figure out in the meantime if the 6 month verbal contract is legal and I actually don’t need the written from her- she is of course trying to play games), I would rather not interact with her nor do I think she will be responsive.
Hi Bastien! Thank you for the article. I have a few questions as I am currently paying rent in two different apartments:
Can I be registered/ angemeldet in two different flats? If so, does this carry any financial costs/ could it be a problem regarding taxes or any social benefits? (maybe it’s not connected at all)
Is it possible or legal for me to sign Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung document for my sister who just moved to Germany without consulting the landlord?
What are the steps?
hi Bastien, thank you for the detailed explanation. I have a query – I am the main tenant in my apartment. My landlord confirmed me that I can provide Wohnungsgeberbestätigung to my wife arriving soon to Berlin and live with me. can you please let me know which name to provide in “Angaben zum Eigentümer” ?
Thanks for the info!
My landlord provided me the pdf of the Wohungsgeberbestatigung
Can I submit it via email?
If not can I submit a black and white print out of it?
Hello Bastien, I just settled in Berlin and I need my Wohnungsgeberbestätigung but the landlord say that it’s to an Hausverwaltung to send the document filled. Do we need to go that way or he can directly fill it ?
Thank you !
I’m temporarily staying with someone that doesn’t want to let their landlord know that I’m staying with them. Will the registration office verify with the landlord if the main tenant fills out the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung?
Hi Bastien, thank you for the great explanation of the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. I am currently renting an apartment in Berlin for a periode of four months. I do not have a lease or signed contract with my landlord, but we have a written “non-legal agreement” (as he puts it in the agreement) listing the conditions of the apartment and the duration of the stay. I pay rent and deposite. The problem is, that he denies me Anmeldung on the address. He says it is too troublesome to do so when I am only staying four months and that I am only staying as a guest. Is he legally allowed to do so? He has not provied me with the document of Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.
Hi Bastien. Thank you so much for this info. In the section whereby we list the number of people moving in, should I list the tenant and their sibling’s name there? I am the only one moving in by the way.
Thank you.
Hey Bastien, thanks for the post/info. Quick question – I am going to register at a friend’s apartment where she’s the owner. Do I have to put her name again under “Angaben zum Eigentümer…” b/c she’s currently living there…? Thanks for your help!
