This is a micro-guide about using a power of attorney to register your address at the Bürgeramt.

Why you might need the power of attorney to do the Anmeldung

  • In Germany, when you move into a new apartment, you’re legally required to register your address with the local registration office (Bürgeramt) – a process called Anmeldung.
  • Normally, this must be done in person. However, if you’re unable to attend the appointment yourself (for example, you’re abroad, working, or unable to get a timely appointment), you can authorize someone else to register on your behalf.
  • This document is a Vollmacht (a power of attorney) which legally allows a trusted person (a friend, partner, relocation agent, etc.) to complete your Anmeldung at the Bürgeramt for you.
  • They will need to bring this signed authorization, along with your completed Anmeldung form, Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation), their passport/ID card as well as your a your passport or ID card.
  • I personally went through this process, using the exact resources listed on this page and there were no issues.

Some cities in Germany have this document as part of the standard Anmeldung form (Münich as an example here). However, you can use any template/document than the one provided by the city. It’s just as valid.
